PROPELLER WASH BEAD FILTERS image 1
The Propeller Washed Bead Filters are used primarily for solids capture but also can be used as bioclarifiers where both solids removal and biofiltration are carried out simultaneously. Water enters the bead filter and flows upward through the bead bed. The beads create a barrier from solids to pass through as well as surface area for nitrifying bacteria.

To discharge captured solids the filter is periodically backwashed by interrupting the flow or bypassing the filter. A high speed propeller is used to agitate and expand the media bed. This process releases captured solids and debris from the bead bed allowing it to settle into the bottom of the filter where it is removed as a concentrated waste stream. After the settling period is sufficed water flow is restored as normal.

Propeller Bead Filters employ an aggressive method of backwashing which serves to free the bed of solids but also will knock off nitrifying bacteria. Consult Oceans Design when using the filter as a bioclarifier to assure an appropriate sized filter is selected.
