Oceans Design fabricates PVC tanks from 3/8" and 1/2" Type 1 pvc sheet in our plastics shop. These tanks are economical and versatile, adaptable to a wide array of sizes and applications. Tank joints are welded and double reinforced with Type 711 industrial grade PVC cement. Working with PVC allows for flexibility in design and construction. Tanks can include acrylic windows, weirs for controlling water height, perforated walls, removable dividers, and customized compartments for incorporating filtration. Pictured to the left is a fish raceway (flume) to conduct swimming speed trials on a variety of fish species. This particular system was fabricated for NOAA, South West Fisheries Science Center, in La Jolla, California. The system was designed to reach velocities in excess of 2 ft/sec translating to 3+ body lengths per second swim speed. The project was a collaboration between NOAA and Oceans Design which involved several weeks of testing with prototype raceways.
